William Robert Lamont, Jr.

Bob Lamont, 92 - Ambler, PA

Bob Lamont, affectionately known as Poppy, passed away at the age of 92 on Wednesday April 14, 2021. He was born September 4th 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to William Robert Lamont, Sr. and Irma Kern. Bob’s most cherished roles in life were those of loving husband to Nancy Lamont (Munn), brother to sisters Irma Atchison and Jean McFeeters (predeceased) and surviving sister Carol Ottenbreit (Len); father to Cathy Kammler, (Fred), P.J. King (John) and Jeff Lamont (Lisa); Grandfather to Jennifer Kammler, Kaitlin Murphy (Ryan), Elizabeth Sublinksy (Jeff), Jeffrey King (Vicki), Alexandra King, A.J. Lamont and Anna Lamont. His great grandchildren are Miles and Piper Murphy, Audrey Sublinsky, and SheaLynn King.

Bob grew up in Olney and Elkins Park, PA and graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1946, where he met the love of his life, Nancy Munn whom he married on September 23, 1950.

He continued his education at the engineering program at Rochester Institute for Technology and finished with a Bachelors degree from Penn State. He honorably served as a machinist in the U.S. Army which sent him on a 13 month tour in Japan during the Korean War.

Having trained in the family gear manufacturing business, Bob started his own successful company, Atchmont Gear Company in Ivyland, PA where he sold the business in 1996 and then retired. It was truly a family business and everyone was given an opportunity to learn the craft and work the floor. He was a firm but fair boss and was called Poppy Cheese by those who worked for him and loved him.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling leagues, playing outfield in a men’s softball league, traveling, dancing, reading, going down the shore in Ocean City, NJ and all social gatherings with family and friends. He was a member of Lulu Temple Country Club and Glenside Old Timers. Bob was a big fan of the home team, Phillies, Eagles, and loved watching golf. He loved politics and he loved debating politics.

Bob and Nancy lived most recently at Gwynedd Estates where they were surrounded by friends and were able to be social with lunches in the café, afternoons playing pool, bocce and drinking scotch. Other activities included giving pool lessons, singing in the choir, and participated in the ACTS “OlympiACTS” through their greater community. He volunteered with the Red Cross as a driver for over 20 years, delivered for Meals on Wheels and assisted with Vespers.

Bob was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church (Jenkintown, PA) where he served at a Trustee and most recently Lower Providence Presbyterian Church (Norristown, PA), he was an usher and member of the men’s group. He had a strong sense of faith and was always proud of his family lineage and their respective participation in all activities of the church.

Most recently, Bob and Nancy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary together August 1, 2020 with all of their children, their children’s children, and their children’s children’s children.

This was the event of a lifetime.

Most importantly his love of family and friends, who he always put before himself define his life and the legacy he will leave. Poppy had a great sense of humor, a twinkle in his eye, and led his family with the grace of a hero.

There will be a memorial service open to family and friends on Saturday, May 1, 2021 with visitation starting at 10:00am at Lower Providence Presbyterian Church.  Please register if you plan to attend.
